The Complete Guide to Waterproof Stickers (What Actually Makes a Sticker Waterproof)
Share
Search for waterproof stickers and every print shop on the internet claims theirs qualify. Most are stretching the truth. There's a hard physical difference between a sticker that is made of waterproof material and one that has a water-resistant coating sprayed over paper.
Film vs. coating: the test that separates them
Cut a coated paper sticker in half and drop it in water. Within minutes, water wicks in from the cut edge, the paper swells, and the sticker delaminates. Do the same with a BOPP sticker and nothing happens — because BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) is a plastic film. There is no paper core to soak.
What BOPP survives
- Dishwashers — top-rack cycles on tumblers and bottles
- Coolers and freezers — adhesive rated well below freezing
- Direct sun — UV-resistant inks rated 5+ years outdoors
- Oils and sanitizer — non-porous film wipes clean
- Salt water — boats, kayaks, and beach gear
When paper stickers are fine
Indoor, dry, short-life jobs: envelope seals, single-event handouts, dry packaging accents. If the sticker will ever meet condensation — a cold drink, a bathroom shelf, a market cooler — paper fails.
How to order stickers that actually last
Ask your printer one question: "Is this a polypropylene or vinyl film, or coated paper?" At Carrco we only print on waterproof BOPP — every custom sticker and product label that leaves our St. Petersburg shop is the same film national brands use. Upload your art, pick a shape, and it ships in 3–5 business days.
